Dental assisting is a rewarding and desirable career today. A respectable salary, a high level of demand, and job security make dental assisting a promising occupation to pursue. Dental assisting can open the door to other occupations within healthcare, such as becoming a dental hygienist.

A Healthcare Provider CPR certification class is included in this course and covers the relevant material necessary to prepare students to take the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) Dental Assisting exam offered through the State of Texas.

About the Program

Dental assistants work alongside dentists and dental hygienists in a dental office and perform a variety of administrative and clinical tasks. The primary role of a dental assistant is assisting the dentist during procedures by providing tools and materials, and by performing dental office-related tasks.

The 112-hours course prepares students for entry-level positions in one of the fastest-growing health care positions. The course will cover key areas and topics, exposing the student to both classroom and hands-on instruction. The classroom instruction reviews the necessary anatomy, terminology, legal and ethical issues as well as the policy and guidelines necessary to understanding the scope of practice and the practical aspects of Dental Assisting. Topics include instrument identification, equipment maintenance, tooth structure, and oral cavity anatomy, dental anesthesia, sterilization, and charting.

The student will learn the steps necessary to assist the dentist while providing quality dental care within the community. The curriculum includes a review of tooth charting, restorations, bridge implants, bitewing, pantograph, and periapical x-ray, and the mixing of dental cement.
