The Hubbard A. “Bubba” Clinton Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005. Mr. Clinton was one of Panola College’s first students and a long time friend of the institution.
Hubbard Alvin “Bubba” Clinton was born August 26, 1930 in the Patrick Community of Rusk County, Texas to Alvin Curtis and Bessie Mae Middlebrook Clinton. He attended rural Patrick school, graduated from Henderson High School and went on to attend Panola College.
In 1948, Panola College purchased two small Ford buses and hired Jack Roberson and Bubba Clinton as drivers at $85 per month. Roberson would transport students from Tenaha, Center, Joaquin, Gary and points in between, while Clinton would drive from Mount Enterprise through Minden and Clayton. Little did Bubba know then that he was contributing to a College that would eventually grow from 185 students in 1948 to over 1900 by the fall of 2005.
Bubba went on to serve his country with the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He married Juanita Wedgeworth on July 22, 1950. Later, he owned and operated the Carthage Furniture Company for many years.
Mr. Clinton gave his time and support to the community he loved. He was a member of the Carthage Volunteer Fire Department for 46 years where he served as assistant chief and was elected “Fireman of the Year” in 1974. He was a member of the Carthage Lion’s Club and served as president from 1978 to 1979. Clinton was also a member of the Carthage Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #521 and a Shriner with the Sharon Temple in Tyler. In 1984 he came back to Panola College where he served as a member of the Board of Trustees through 1989. In 1987, Mr. Clinton was selected as “Panola County Citizen of the Year”.
The Hubbard A. “Bubba” Clinton Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving student.
