The Dr. A.N. “Newsom” Tiller Memorial Scholarship was established in 2002 by Ms. Huelitt B.Cariker in honor and celebration of her devoted husband.
A.N. “Newsom” Tiller was born July 3, 1904 in Carthage. A lifelong resident of Panola County, he was the son of John William and Mary Jane Tillery Tiller.
Dr. Tiller became a Methodist minister in 1934 and served 17 charges in the United Methodist Church over a period of 51 years. In June 1984, he traveled to the Holy Land. There he baptized 18 people in the Jordan River, which was a highlight of his ministry. Another high point in his life occurred on May 13, 1985 when he married Ms. Huelitt Biggs Chadwick. Dr. Tiller pastored Pisgah and Ebenezer Churches in Panola County for a period of 17 years before retiring May 25, 1986.
Dr. Tiller was a member of the Texas Conference of Methodist Churches and a member of the New World Association of Bible Students. He was also a master Mason of Carthage Masonic Lodge No. 521 A.F. and A.M.
Continuing his legacy of helping others, the Dr. A.N. Newsom Tiller Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to assist a deserving Panola College student.
