The Brent Shane Gee Memorial Scholarship was established by his mother, Diana Ponder, and sister, Shelley Caraway, to honor Brent Gee. Mr. Gee served as police chief of Panola College from 1993 to 2003.
Mr. Gee graduated from Kilgore High School in 1984, attended Kilgore College and graduated from Sam Houston State University with a B.S. in Criminal Justice. He started his law enforcement career with Overton Police Department. Later he joined the Panola County Sheriff's Department to establish a D.A.R.E. program. The Gees liked Carthage so much that they decided to stay and raise their family here.
Brent Gee loved to learn new things. As a child, he developed an intense interest in aviation and earned his private pilot certificate at the age of 16. He added advanced ratings to his license and continued to fly throughout his life. He found great joy in sharing his love of aviation with others.
It was this love of education that led him to Panola College. Mr. Gee served the students, staff, and faculty for 10 years before his death. His closest friends say that he was never too busy to stop and help someone and that he never met a stranger. Brent felt an education is the most important possession a person can acquire and he would be pleased to know that a scholarship has been established in his memory to help students reach their full potential.
The Brent Shane Gee Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving student. The selection and announcement naming the recipients will be made in the spring each year.
